Pros: The basic dungeon crawler gameplay is well refined, the ‘upgrades’ are particularly enjoyable.

Cons: The story may pass right over you, lacking in graphical quality.

Review

In Dungeon Crawlers you and your team must slash, spear and set alight the many foes you encounter through the dusty caverns and weathered castles you travel, in an effort to complete your weak, and rather unnecessary objective. The story in Dungeon Crawlers is not what will keep you attached to it, in fact the insufferably cheesy humour crammed into every cutscene, combined with the narrative that only seems to slow you down, you may even be held back from having a good time with it. However if those particular disappointments don’t encumber your experience, the basic dungeon crawling gameplay is nicely executed and makes for enjoyable gameplay.

For the uninitiated a dungeon crawler is genre of game where you navigate through confined, labyrinth type environments, collect loot, and most importantly, battle. If that genre is appealing to you, you will probably garner some fun out of playing Dungeon Crawlers. The gameplay is basic stuff. Apart from the RTS/turn-by-turn gameplay that I suspect exists to slow you down, the tried and tested loot, fight, explore, loot, fight, explore gameplay is still there. Luckily though it is not as repetitive as you might think. Chapter by chapter the environment changes and somewhat refreshes the eyes, and the levelling up system combined with increasingly advanced loot encourages that flare of excitement you feel when you finally get your bloodied hands on a strikingly powerful sword. Or when you find yourself surrounded by enemies, running desperately low on health and then not a moment too soon you catch the level up sound and all the weight falls off your shoulders.

But with minimal story comes minimal review. The story is something so unremarkable and filled out with ridiculous humour it can hinder the game at times rather than acting as a mechanic to take you from one place to another. If you plan on purchasing Dungeon Crawlers, do so for the gameplay, not the story.

Considering this is a port from iOS devices the graphics are as you would expect, poor. The low graphical standard is not something that should turn you off. It’s not a glaring issue and there are alterable graphical options, negligible they may be.

Dungeon Crawlers is a potentially fun excursion if you overlook the story and graphical quality. The dungeon crawling gameplay is genuinely fun, not to mention the addictive quality to keep on collecting better equipment.
