Review

Glider is an early physics-based arcade game in which the objective is to use air vents and radiators to gain altitude and soar around a 2D environment to collect stars.

In this archaic little game, vents act as portals, transporting your paper plane to other vents. Heaters, when they’re turned on, give the plane altitude when hovering over them. There are several obstacles which must be avoided, from vases to stacks of books to big red balloons. Sometimes electrical outlets are charged and if the glider smacks into one of those it gets burned up. Besides the obstacles and traps there’s only one rule: don’t land. It’s challenging to keep the paper plane in the air and make it to the end of a level but it’s even harder to collect all the stars or pick up extra lives.

The formula is tempting and thankfully Glider uses a waypoint system to allow you to start off at the nearest waypoint, rather than having to play all of the beginning levels again. Glider isn’t the sort of highscore game where levels are randomly generated. This means that the difficulty does ramp up as you progress through game. Having to play from the very beginner floors every time would have been a right pain, but the waypoint system alleviates a lot of the potential frustration whilst not being too generous.

Fortunately, the controls are simple too. The arrow keys are used to switch direction and everything else depends on precise timing and figuring out how to move from one safe spot to the next.

As far as the smaller features of the game, the graphics are basic but sharp and the music is reminiscent of old arcade games. The overall simplicity of the game doesn’t do it any favors, but doesn’t mark the game down either.

Glider is a great arcade game if you have the determination to keep pushing through the ever harder levels. The variety in level design and the new gameplay elements that are slowly introduced makes it a somewhat compelling game, despite its overall simplicity.
