Pocket Planes for Mac Impressions

Published on October 15, 2012, by in All, News.

Pocket Planes for Mac is an almost direct port from the iPhone and iPad version of the game that more than serves its purpose of allowing Pocket Plane addicts to update their plane empire from anywhere. Even the work computer.Whilst I can’t say downloading Pocket Planes for Mac will do wonders for your productivity, it’s a very straight forward port of one of the most loved fermium games on iOS. In fact, not much at all has been changed from the iPhone version of the game. The screen size ratio remains the same, screen resolution has been upped (but that’s not saying much considering the game is all pixelated anyway) and most of the buttons have been made smaller.

Pocket Planes makes use of the newly added Game Center and Push Notifications feature released in Mountain Lion (which is required), which rather irritably lets you know exactly when you need to send off a new plane to another location, luring you back into the game. You can also gather data from your other devices logged into the same Game Center account, allowing you to start off exactly where you left off on your iPhone.

The whole experience is all well implemented, whilst not going overboard with new features. There aren’t a lot of Mac specific changes, and there are some minor graphical errors that occur because of the switch to Mac. If I was being picky, I would suggest maybe some multi-touch gesture controls, because there is a lot of clicking required.

Otherwise, if you feel like just having Pocket Planes on your phone is not enough, prepare to have it invade your desktop as well. Just don’t download it when you have some real work to do.
