Pros: Stylish retro look, got the basics nailed.

Cons: Floaty controls, frustrating and fiddly, unoriginal and simple puzzles.

Review

RIFT is a possibly promising platformer about a podgy monster demanding more and more chocolate cake to appease his endless appetite. As the abiding robot servant, you must run and jump around each level, fetching the cake and bringing it to your master.

It’s a good idea backed up by an original retro style and character. As you do your work, your master continues to demand his chocolately sustenance to curb his cravings for the day… or minute. All the while your abiding robot remarks about his current predicament in a neutral, robot-like fashion.

But where the game has its design quirks, its platforming prowess needs some work. Your robot’s wheels feel too well oiled, leading to you slip off platforms easily. The controls aren’t tight, and close quarters jumping suffers as a result.

RIFT also has very few original ideas and puzzles in all. Levels feel more like a task in battling the floaty controls than solving crafty physics puzzles. Fiddling with boxes can be a long-winded affair, and it doesn’t take long for the frustration to creep in. There is an attempt at some portal-based puzzles, but they don’t come near any sort of complexity Valve’s Portal achieves from which it is heavily inspired. Not even close.

RIFT may have some potential, but it’s not a satisfying platformer I’d like to spend my hours enjoying.
