Best Free Games on the Mac App Store To Grab Right Now

Published on August 13, 2012, by in All, News.

There really is no better price than free, and we have lined up a few of the Mac App Store’s best freebies ripe for the picking. Do keep in mind that whilst all of these games are free, most of them include in-app purchases that cost money.

Battle Nations

Battle Nations is both a real-time strategy game, as well as having a turn-based strategy element which both work really well. It looks great, if a bit pixelated at times, and includes fun strategic gameplay that’s sure to tick all the boxes.

The Catch?

The real time strategy set-up revolves around nanopods which speed up processes such as gaining from a crop yeild, and these nanopods can be bought by the container-load if you wish, with a cost of up to $34.99. But if you don’t mind waiting for processes to complete, then you’re getting a great complete game for nothing.

Touchgrind

Touchgrind is more a test app then a fully fledged game. Illusion Labs, who are most notably known for their games for iOS like Labyrinth 2 and Sway, have brought over the Touchgrind for Mac. It’s a simple top-down skateboard game with the ability to execute tricks and grinds on an assortment of apparatus like rails and ramps. The control scheme is especially innovate and involves the player placing two fingers on their trackpad – just as if they were two feet – and manipulating them to execute tricks. It takes a while to get used to, but Touchgrind pros will be able to rack up huge points with a variety of tricks.

The Catch?

Touchgrind is one of the few free games that doesn’t include any in-app purchases, but you will need a trackpad to play.

Shadow Era

Fans of card games will love Shadow Era; a free multiplayer card game with absolutely stunning card design and deep strategic gameplay. There are over 200 card designs, with more being added. You can trade cards at the merchant with gold earned at each match. There is a huge variety in card designs, from the blood lusting wolven class to the electrifying elemental, but you can only pick one class to fight with.

The Catch?

Gold is hard earned, and if you want to get a top-class deck fast then you may want to purchase some shadow crystals which buy bulk packs of cards. Shadow Crystals are also earned in-game, and there is no question that you can still be competitive in online matches without paying a dime. You do need an internet connection. A great feature is that you can also fit in a few games on your iOS or Android phone, and in a browser.

RC Mini Racers

RC Mini Racers is a fun free racer with questionable physics but fun explosive action. Each car has the ability to place mines and send off seeking missiles which are picked up on the track.

The Catch?

In-app purchases allow you to buy new paints, wheels and antennas if you don’t want to spend the hours and hours of grinding required to drum up the coins. However all of the tracks are readily available to tear through.

Red Crucible 2

Red Crucible 2 offers great online first-person shooting, including vehicles like planes and tanks. It’s graphics may not be state of the art, but there is a heap of content offered without having to pay.

The Catch?

To get better weapons like snipers, you may consider buying some in-game currency with real money, but the game is fun enough without paying a dime.
