OneClickMac’s Game of the Year is…

While publishers like Feral Interactive do a great job of porting over games like BioShock and Batman: Arkham Asylum to the Mac, we really wanted to celebrate an original Mac App Store game for this year’s game of the year. Something that was created and nurtured specifically for us Mac gamers. And what a game it is. Galaxy on Fire 2 Full HD is an expansive, addicting and absolutely beautiful space RPG/Trader that captures the essence of what an iPhone port is all about. In fact, calling it an iPhone port is like calling the Egyptian Pyramids a pile of bricks. Technically it is, but so much work has been put into making Galaxy on Fire 2 Full HD (2 man years to be exact) a brilliant Mac game. So much so that its iOS roots are buried deep, deep beneath the surface. We wanted to commend this, and crown it our official Game of the Year.

Who knew Batman would grow so big? Batman Arkham Asylum is a rough and tumble combat/platformer action-adventure where you fly, glide, swing and run through the infamous Arkham Asylum in an attempt to stop the evil Joker from unleashing hell on Gotham. It’s good, really good.

The twisted tale of Rapture and its unfortunate inhabitants is this year’s plot of the year. It’s deep, dark and incredibly compelling. Big daddies, little sisters, a fight for power and an eventual downfall. Who could ask for more?

Although gameplay isn’t perfect, Trine 2 absolutely stunned us to silence when we played it this December. It’s hard not to stop and gaze at the luxuriant green backdrop of a towering forest. Or the huge castles perched upon crumbling cliffs residing before a vibrant orange sunset. If Trine 2 is anything, it’s a masterpiece.
Best Multiplayer Game

Bomb Squad may not have a lot of single-player content, or online multiplayer, but it’s honestly the most fun you will have with a few friends in the same room. Stock up on controllers, iPhones, iPods, Wii-motes anything, and have a darn good time.
Best Shooter

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the king of shooters. The fast-paced action and riveting storyline makes it, even today, the most memorable COD out there.
Best Action/Adventure Game

Grand Theft Auto… jacking cars, killing innocent civilians and dealing drugs since 1998. GTA has made a name for itself as the sandbox guru, allowing players to enter a functioning city to do whatever they want. Vice City was arguably Rockstar’s most enjoyable creation, with maybe San Andreas coming a close second. It’s old, but a total classic.
Best Platformer

Limbo is a creepy, black and white puzzle platformer about a young innocent boy looking for his sister. Its haunting atmosphere makes it the most memorable platformer out there. Full review coming soon.
Best Puzzler

If you want mind-bending, you want Braid. It’s watercolour environments, time-travelling problems and a mystical story makes Braid the best Puzzle Platformer on the Mac App Store to date.
Best Racer
DiRT 2 is a challenging, yet brilliantly rewarding, rugged racer that has you flying over desert sands and tarmac arenas. It’s ridiculous fun and monstrously competitive.
Best Strategy Game

Rome Total War really captures the essence of battle. Large scale armies, huge sieges and a smooth unit management system. Its breadth of unit choice and abilities makes it a must buy for any strategy fanatic.
Best Point-and-Click Adventure

Machinarium is an emotional and thoughtful point-and-click that just wows. Once you start playing it, you get sucked into this imaginative world that you can’t pull yourself away from. Simply brilliant.
